Black-and-White

These past few months flew by for me. I feel like I’m living day to day, and the worst part is that I’ve lost momentum in building my portfolio work and sketching every day. But I’m trying to get back into it and go back to the ‘one thing a day’ mentality.

I wanted to share my latest assignment from the MATS Bootcamp (I wrote about the first two assignments in my previous post). The assignment was for a middle-grade story called The Lark by Zoë Tucker, written specifically for the class. It’s about a girl named Lark who wakes up to discover a gigantic cat roaming her city. Middle-grade books are typically for ages 7-9; they are chapter books with fewer illustrations, mostly black-and-white spot illustrations. I was a little intimidated by the assignment since I don’t usually work in black-and-white, but in the end, I fell in love with the idea of illustrating for an older audience. Up until this point, I had only thought about illustrating picture books when considering children’s books. After this assignment, I’m excited about developing my portfolio for this age group.

I created the illustrations digitally using Procreate, I felt it would give me better control over the values, which is really important in black-and-white illustrations.

I hope everyone is having a great fall. Happy Halloween!!
Until next month –
